A Hong Kong Nepalese resident has, for the first time ever, been admitted as solicitor in Hong Kong. Mr. Yek Narayan Sharma, after successfully passing the Overseas Lawyers Qualification Examination conducted by the Law Society of Hong Kong, was addmitted into the professon on Saturday, 20 March.
Mr. Sharma obtained his LL.M. from City University of Hong Kong in 2000 and his LLB from University of London in 2004. He moved to Hong Kong from Nepal in 1997 and has been a registered court interpreter providing Nepalese/English interpretation services to the Nepalese community members in Hong Kong. He has also been handling legal cases of Nepalese residents in Hong Kong in the areas of personal injuries, immigration and matrimonial issues. He obtained his B.A., B.Ed. and B.L. from Tribhuvan University in Nepal before his arrival in Hong Kong. Mr. Sharma is the first member of the community to complete the qualification and get admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong. Expressing his joy for being a solicitor in Hong Kong he also committed to serving the Nepalese community in Hong Kong. "I will still be serving Nepalese community members in Hong Kong because they are facing many problems due to their lack of knowledge in English and Chinese," he said. A large number of well wishers including Nepalese Consulate General Mr. Binod Kumar Upadhya and Consul Mr. Kiran Shakya were present in his admission ceremony at the Hight Court at Admiralty on Saturday morning.
