Nepalese refugees slip into Hong Kong through Macau and Mainland China using sea routes and illegal cross points, a press statement released by Nepalese Consulate General in Hong Kong says.

Citing the information provided by victims, it says that the illegal human traffickers transport people through various stopovers such as Bankok, Malaysia and through Macau.

"The illegal agents lure people in Nepal saying that they could get fat salaried jobs in Hong Kong if registered as refugees with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Hong Kong, and charge them tens of thousands. But illegal immigrants and refugees do not have chances to get jobs in Hong Kong due to the identity cards verification system in employment." The press release says.

According to sources Nepalese refugees are left unattended at the hill sides of Hong Kong in the bordering areas by human traffickers. Hundreds of refugees are compelled to sleep in the streets or parks due to lack of food and shelter in Hong Kong. The UNHCR only registers the people from countries with civil conflicts but does not look after their subsequent problems. When registering in Hong Kong as refugees, people often claim that their life is in danger if returned. The officials at the UNHCR simply register people as refugees based on their personal account. However, they do not look into the changed political situation in Nepal at the moment. The civil war Nepal encountered for almost 10 year has already ended and the waring parties have turned into peaceful political forces now.

The unscrupulous traffickers make use of the UNHCR's failure to review its policy based on the assessment of changing political scenario around the world and cause damage to innocent people.

Around a thousand Nepalese refugees are believed to be stranded in Hong Kong and more are believed to be en route.

The statement from Nepalese Consulate has urged people to pass it the information about the unscrupulous human traffickers. Consulate General has also urged people not to fall prey to the false promises of the human traffickers.
